Functional Capacity Assessment 

At its essence, occupational therapy interventions revolves around enhancing an individual's self-reliance, enabling them to engage socially within their community and accomplish essential tasks in their daily life. In instances where an individual's autonomy and functioning are compromised due to a disability, they might be referred for an evaluation of their functional capacity by occupational therapy experts. This assessment is conducted with the purpose of evaluating the individual's present functioning, pinpointing their strengths and limitations across all aspects of daily life. This information serves as the foundation for generating a spectrum of recommendations and intervention approaches, all geared towards mitigating challenges and fostering maximal independence. Subsequently, therapeutic objectives are formulated, which entail either honing the individual's skills or adapting the environment to surmount obstacles.

Why would a person need an assessment?

A functional assessments aim to determine an individual’s level of function, and is often required to:

  • Establish an individual’s baseline functioning in a wide variety of areas

  • Determine the level of supports they may need and what type of accommodation setting would be most suitable.

  • Determine if the person needs specialized equipment or other assistive technology and resources

  • Guide future therapy and funding, based on identified goals and needs.
